Step Ahead of Verrucae: Effective Treatments That Work

At One Step Ahead Podiatry, we offer a range of evidence-based verruca treatments tailored to suit different patients, lifestyles, and clinical presentations. Below is an overview of the approaches we use to help you get back to pain-free walking.

We understand that no single treatment works for everyone. That’s why we offer a selection of clinically proven options, allowing us to tailor care to your needs.

Verrutop Treatment

Verrutop is a topical treatment designed to chemically cauterise the verruca tissue. It works by causing controlled destruction of the infected skin, encouraging the body to regenerate healthy tissue in its place.

This treatment is quick to apply in clinic and is generally well tolerated. It’s particularly suitable for patients who want a straightforward, non-invasive approach. Multiple applications may be required depending on the size and persistence of the verruca. We generally recommend up to 6 treatments with Verrutop, spaced around 2 weeks apart, for optimal results.

Swift Microwave Therapy

Swift is an innovative treatment that uses microwave energy to target the verruca as it penetrates deeper into the skin. Unlike most topical treatments, Swift works by stimulating your body’s immune response to recognise and fight the virus.

Treatment sessions are short and typically spaced four weeks apart. One of the advantages of Swift is that it does not break the skin, meaning there is minimal need for dressings or aftercare, and you can continue your normal activities immediately.

Whilst we do offer stand alone Swift treatments, research and clinical experience suggests that 3-4 Swift sessions are required for best results; with this protocol, Swift efficacy is around 80%, making it one of the most effective clinical verruca treatments.

This is an excellent option for stubborn or long-standing verrucae that have not responded to previous treatments.

Verruca Needling

Verruca needling is a minor surgical procedure carried out under local anaesthetic. It involves repeatedly puncturing the verruca to introduce the virus deeper into the tissue, which helps trigger a strong immune response.

This approach is often considered for more persistent verrucae or when other treatments have been unsuccessful. The goal is not just to treat the verruca itself, but to stimulate the body to clear the virus more broadly—often leading to resolution of multiple lesions.

This is a one time treatment, making it ideal if you cannot commit to regular appointments. Some post-procedure care is required, and we will guide you through the recovery process to ensure optimal healing.

Which Treatment is Right for You?

Choosing the right treatment depends on several factors, including:

  • The size and location of the verruca
  • How long it has been present
  • Previous treatments tried
  • Your general health and preferences

During your appointment, we’ll carry out a thorough assessment and discuss the most appropriate options with you.

Take the First Step

Verrucae can sometimes resolve on their own, but many persist and become increasingly uncomfortable. Early intervention can often lead to quicker and more effective outcomes.
